HP's new CEO gets $9.8M up front, stock - Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal

Interesting, so Oracle snatches up Hurd and HP gets their new CEO from SAP. Then the dude gets $4.6M for relocating! And guess who is right in the middle stirring it up??? Yep, Gloria Allred...

The world lost an amazing person today...

http://www.carepages.com/carepages/KathysCrusade

I met Kathy when I worked at TAC Worldwide she was in corporate training. Although it's been 10 years since I have seen her I think of her often. Sweet dreams Kathy...

The last chick leaves the nest

Bittersweet?? My youngest will start college next week in beautiful Santa Barbara.  The emotions are much different than when my oldest went to school. Thinking about no kids around for the first time in twenty five years is daunting.

Nora and I spend a lot more time thinking about how we can spend quality time together without driving each other crazy!

My hope is that we can experience a new level of love and enjoyment of each other as well taking advantage of this chance to see the world!

For all the empty nesters who have gone before me I salute you!

HP is certainly finding ways to be in the news lately...

I guess that $14BB is cash is starting to burn a hole in their pocket!  Congrats to my friends at Arcsight!

Best rock band in the world??

The first album I ever owned was Physical Graffiti  and to get to actually play it I worked a summer job selling door-to-door subscriptions to the Mercury News so I could  buy a little stereo with a turn table and I wore that record out!

In 1977 I was a sophomore in HS and we got to see the mighty Zep at Day on the Green in Oakland. If you were there you might remember the stage.

And the massive crowd.

It would turn out to be their last live performance in the United Sates.

Moderate boost seen in Q4 hiring

It's interesting to me that while only 11% of those surveyed plan to add staff in the coming months 47% cite difficulty hiring as a challenge. This certainly mirrors my own experience where despite high unemployment rates key positions are as hard, or harder, to fill than during times of low unemployment. "Good folks are hard to find"

The story.

Looking toward the final months of the year, 11 percent of executives interviewed expect to increase the number of full-time staff they employ in professional occupations in the fourth quarter, according to a survey released Wednesday by Robert Half.
The Menlo Park-based company said its survey showed that five percent of executives anticipate declines, resulting in a net 6 percent increase in hiring activity, up three points from the third-quarter forecast.
Eighty-six percent of respondents expressed at least some confidence in the growth prospects for their companies, rising slightly from 85 percent reported in the third-quarter survey. The number of executives citing recruiting challenges also rose, climbing from 42 percent in the third quarter to 47 percent.

14, 000 mile Bike ride from Alaska to Argentina???

I was pretty happy with myself the other day when I banged out 10 miles in 30 minutes on the treadmill at the gym. I have a feeling that Catalina and Peter of Tip2Tip 2010 might not be too impressed. You see Peter and Catalina are riding from Alaska to Argentina in one year.

We met Peter (who lives in Gilroy) and Catalina at church today where they were hoping to land some sponsers and secure some donations for their cause. Their mission is to raise money for ActiveWater.

They are only a few weeks into their trip but they are already in the Bay Area. You can follow their progress on their website and on Facebook. If you have ever wanted to just go big on something these guys are a definite inspiration.

Sorbet on the half shell

I have a love/hate relationship with Costco. I love the shopping but hate the sticker shock at the check stand. There is a product we recently came across that is really cool. It's these kind of finds that make Costco a weekly destination for our family. Island way Sorbet.
They taste fantastic and they each come in a fruit "half shell" excellent presentation. Serve these up the next time you have some guests over for dinner. I guarantee you will not be disappointed!

CBS Sunday Morning - Farmers Markets

A few weeks ago my 25 year old son mentioned that CBS Sunday Morning was must-see TV for him. Odd for a 25 y/o to say about a TV show that airs at 6:00am.  I remember watching this show when Charles Kurault  was the host but for whatever reason I got away from it (6:00am!!).

I am now 2 weeks into the show again and I must say it is full of great and genuinely interesting segments.  Today there was a story about the explosion of farmers markets around the country. My wife and I like to frequent the Farmers Market in Morgan Hill and for whatever reason the trip to the farmers market is so much more fulfilling than a trip to Safeway. I truly appreciate the commitment these small local farmers have to growing great produce.  It's actually pretty easy to create a great meal with such fresh organically grown ingredients.

From where I sit the Farmers Markets rock!

Huntington Station in Morgan Hill

Some friends of ours own a restaurant in Morgan Hill called Huntington Station (Formerly "Glory Days"). They just moved into a great new location downtown at Monterey and Third.  The decor is all sports and they have 6 or so TV's going all the time. The new location also has a great outdoor patio under the shade of a majestic old Oak.  Great food in a great space, do yourself a big favor and stop by.

Empty Nest

In two weeks my youngest child (man now) starts college for the first time in 25 years it will be just the two of us. I wonder how it will go...
